I know it can be hard to get ready for the holidays. It can be an uncomfortable mixture of stress and joy, anxiousness and excitement, worry and fulfilling all at the same time! As a new mom, I am looking forward to the holidays this year beacuse children make the holidays much more enjoyable.
This year, I’m planning to create at least one or two new traditions that my family, the Pierre’s, can continue as my son grows and gets older. To create these new traditions, I’m taking 5 steps to make sure that we get a lasting memory.
Make it special!
Making a night special doesn’t have to cost a lot; it just has to be something out of the ordinary. This can be doing something in a new place, trying a new activity, or getting dressed up beyond the usual casual wear. Whatever you decide to do, take it out of your everyday normal routine and make it different.
Decide on the tradition together.
Crucial tip here! Everyone involved should be in agreement when making this tradition. If only one person is happy or willing to comply it very well may be a one and done kinda thing, you know what I mean? No one wants to dread the tradition and especially not on Thanksgiving or Christmas!
Pick a tradition that can be repeated.
It would be really sad if every year you and your family decided to go on a four hour road trip to see the lights in a particular town, and then the next year find that everyone is too busy to take 8 hours out of their day for the trip. Make sure to pick a tradition that is repeatable no matter the circumstances (barring some major life change). This is the best way to ensure success because it is possible and there will be no excuses!
Build on the tradition.
The first year of doing something may not automatically become a tradition. However, if the plans were fun and exciting and you decided to repeat them again, build on that initial activity and make the tradition as perfect as possible. Maybe you all went sledding last year but were starving after, add in a picnic and make it a whole day!
Keep the memories.
Lastly, part of the fun of yearly traditions is looking back at all of the pictures and comparing old clothes and hair styles. Pictures can also bring up funny or heartwarming stories of the day. Make sure to take pictures throughout the tradition to keep a memory of it.
These tips could be used for any holiday and can be repeated throughout the year. What tips does your family have for starting a tradition?
